Short Answers to Some Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we want to create an independent state for Upstate?
A new independent state is the single most impactful political change which will have a positive impact on Upstaters. For decades, Upstate has languished under a stale political status quo and gross mismanagement by New York State. We seek to create a new state to serve as a catalyst and vehicle to improve the lives of Upstaters and unlock the vast potential of our region.

Is it feasible to create a separate state?
Yes. It will take sustained dedication and hard work from people across Upstate, but great feats are only accomplished through great endeavors. We have founded Upstate Independence with a long-term vision to create the connections and instructions necessary for a new political structure. Fundamental political changes seem impossible until they happen, and then they seem inevitable. We are confident future generations will view the creation of an independent Upstate in much the same way.

How can I support this effort?
There are several ways to support our cause – you can donate to fund our advocacy, volunteer your time, attend our events, or simply spread the word about our mission.

Where does my donation go?
All donations go directly towards supporting our advocacy efforts, which include awareness campaigns, events, legislative initiatives, and operational costs. As a 501(c)(4) non-profit, we take care to ensure that every donation we receive is employed most efficiently to achieve our ultimate goal: the creation of a new and independent state for Upstate. You can donate here.

Why is the creation of a separate state the best solution for Upstate?
New York State’s government is irrevocably broken and structurally unresponsive to the needs of Upstate. We feel it is evident that regardless of the persons or party running New York State’s government, the system itself has proven itself to be endemically corrupt and incompetent. Further, New York State has consistently made policy with only short term, “next election cycle” considerations in mind so that it is simply financially unsustainable. And given the population, wealth, and media disparity between Upstate and New York City, this rotten status quo is unable to be changed as the City’s interests will inevitably be prioritized over those of Upstate.
